Experiential Activity Rules and Activities

Below are rules and assignments for the Great Depression experiential activity.  Please look over both the assignments and rules carefully.  This experiential activity will help you better understand the hardships that many people experienced during the 1930s and early 1940s.  Please remember that while you will only spend one week under these conditions, the Great Depression lasted for over ten years. As you struggle with daily living and going without modern conveniences, think what it would be like if you had to live the next ten years of your life under such conditions.

Notebook expectations

  • two pages (one page front and back) written every day
  • one page for drawing / doodling
  • design / decorate the cover of your booklet
  • by the end of the experience every page will have been used

Activities and Rules:

November 5th and 6th  – Buy food for approved five-day meal schedule.

Food schedule and receipts due Wednesday, November 7th.

Turn in:

  • receipt with your name on the back
  • meal plan with a parent / guardian signature on the front

November 11th – Great Depression experiential experience begins at 6:00 AM (Sunday)

  • Turn in all electrical appliances to parents, including iPods or MP3 players, cell phones, and electronic games.
  • Eat meals as identified on approved seven-day meal schedule.
  • Students will not use hot water on this day.
  • Write a two-page journal entry immediately before going to bed.
    • have one page you used for drawing/doodling

November 12th – Great Depression experience day two (Monday)

  • Make your bed to start the day
  • Eat meals as identified on approved seven-day meal schedule
  • Walk for forty-five (45) minutes in your area
  • Do the dishes for your family after dinner
  • Write a two-page journal entry immediately before going to bed.
    • have one page you used for drawing/doodling

November 13th – Great Depression experience day three (Tuesday)

  • Make your bed to start the day
  • Eat meals as identified on approved seven-day meal schedule.
  • Students will not use hot water for bathing on this day.
  • Wash your uniform by hand, do not use dryer and wear the following school day
    • Have a family member take 3-4 picture of this
  • Spend fifteen (20) minutes entertaining your family (board games, cards, storytelling)
    • Have a family member take 3-4 picture of this
  • Write a two-page journal entry immediately before going to bed.
    • have one page you used for drawing/doodling

November 14th – Great Depression experience day four (Wednesday)

  • Make your bed to start the day
  • Eat meals as identified on approved seven-day meal schedule.
  • Do your homework by candlelight / flashlight
    • Have a family member take 3-4 picture of this
  • Grab a broom and sweep your entire house/apartment
  • Write a two-page journal entry immediately before going to bed.
    • have one page you used for drawing/doodling

November 15th – Great Depression experience day five (Thursday)

  • Make your bed to start the day
  • Eat meals as identified on approved seven-day meal schedule.
  • Students will not use hot water for bathing on this day.
  • Students may eat lunch at a “soup kitchen” on this day. (details to follow)
  • Do the dishes for your family after dinner
  • Do your homework by candlelight/flashlight
    • Have a family member take 3-4 picture of this
    • Journal your overall experience for this time.
  • Experiential experience ends when student goes to bed or at midnight.

Great Depression report. This is all of your journal entries brought together. (Handwritten) – Due Monday, November 19th

Include the following:

  • What themes have been flushed out in your writing?
  • In what areas did you push/limit yourself?

Camera exception: Students will need to have parents take pictures of their home experience.  Parents may take as many pictures as they wish.  Students will need four pictures that will be used to develop a bulletin board to display this experiential experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I get a receipt for the wet market?

Please add any purchases from the wet market to a paper receipt that they received from a store.

What happens to the laptop during this week?

Students should plan on giving their laptop to you, their parent, during this time so temptation does not play a part.

What about lunches during this week at school?

Students should have scheduled their school lunch into the plan for the week. In the past students have scheduled small snacks both before and after lunch.

What about the washing of their own uniform?

Students should plan on washing their uniform at least once during this time. It then must be worn to school during this week after having given it ample time to dry.

Is this safe?

Absolutely. We have had no complications as students have done a great job with the meal schedule for the week. It should be noted, however, that students that participate in strenuous club sports on a regular basis (swimming, soccer, tennis, etc.) should plan on eating a bit more than the rest of the grade to make up for this.

I need my child to have their cell phone on them. What are they supposed to during this week?

Your child’s safety is the most important thing. We are simply asking that they do not use their cell phone to chat/message with their friends while also staying away from online games and surfing the internet. Phones to and from you make total sense.

What about spices and/or seasoning?

Spices along with salt and pepper may be used without purchase.

What if food is given or donated to me during this week?

This food is not a part of the activity and should not be eaten. Remember that food did not “fall from the sky” and was not available to people during this time.
